NSWCFA First Grade St Columbas vs Lidcombe

Football photography from the NSWCFA Premier League First Grade clash between St Columbas and Lidcombe.

After covering the Reserve Grade fixture earlier in the day, I stayed on to photograph the NSWCFA Premier League First Grade clash between St Columbas and Lidcombe. Having played in this competition myself many years ago, it was enjoyable watching the quality on display from behind the camera instead of from the middle of the park.

Lidcombe began the match with fewer than eleven players on the field, allowing St Columbas to immediately settle into possession and dictate the early tempo. Their patient build-up was rewarded with the opening goal from a tight angle—whether it was intended as a shot or an inviting cross mattered little once the ball found the back of the net.

Once Lidcombe reached full strength, the contest quickly became far more balanced. They began creating sustained passages of possession, eventually winning a corner that led to the equaliser shortly afterwards. Momentum had swung and both sides looked capable of taking control.

One of the defining moments of the first half came in dramatic fashion. Attempting to clear the danger with a defensive header, a Lidcombe player inadvertently directed the ball beyond their own goalkeeper in a moment reminiscent of the own goal seen in the Australia versus Egypt match earlier that morning. It handed St Columbas a 2–1 advantage heading into half time and completely changed the mood around the ground.

The second half developed into a genuine arm wrestle. Midfield became increasingly congested as tired legs began to show, leading to heavier tackles, several free kicks and a growing physical edge to the contest. Lidcombe had a chance to draw level from the penalty spot but were unable to convert, while frustrations boiled over late in the game with a brief push-and-shove resulting in a Lidcombe player receiving his marching orders.

Although neither side added to the scoreboard after the break, there was certainly no shortage of chances. Both teams continued testing the goalkeepers, producing several quality saves and creating plenty of opportunities for football photography. From fast transitions to physical midfield battles and emotional reactions after missed chances, the match delivered a little bit of everything.

Watching both grades across the day was a reminder of why the NSWCFA continues to produce such enjoyable football. Strong community clubs, competitive matches and players giving everything for the badge made for another memorable day on the sidelines.
