Grand Final football doesn’t always need a long list of goals to deliver a memorable contest. The U16 Division 2 decider between Rouse Hill Rams and Castle Hill United was a genuine arm wrestle, with both sides creating opportunities, competing hard through midfield and waiting for someone to produce the moment that would separate them.

The first half moved regularly from one end of the field to the other. Neither team was able to take complete control, with promising attacks developing at both ends before being met by some strong defensive work and plenty of solid tackling.

There were opportunities in front of both goals, but neither side could find the finish they needed. With so little separating the teams, they headed into half time locked at 0–0 and with the Grand Final still completely up for grabs.

The second half initially followed much the same pattern. Possession continued to move backwards and forwards, neither side willing to give much away as the contest developed into a midfield arm wrestle.

Then came the moment the game had been waiting for.

A Rams player found some space around the edge of the 18-yard box and decided to take the chance from distance. The strike climbed over the goalkeeper before dropping beautifully into the top corner.

1–0 Rams.

It was the sort of goal made for a Grand Final — a single moment of quality in a match where clear openings had been difficult to find.

The goal seemed to settle the Rams. They began enjoying more possession and building more sustained attacking pressure, creating further opportunities to give themselves some breathing room on the scoreboard.

Castle Hill United never allowed them to become comfortable, though. They continued to counterattack and stayed in the contest right until the end, knowing that with only one goal separating the teams, a single opportunity could send the Grand Final in another direction.

That opportunity never quite arrived.

The Rams held their structure, protected the narrow advantage and saw out the remaining minutes to claim a 1–0 victory and the U16 Division 2 Grand Final.

For a match decided by one goal, there was no shortage of action to capture. The physical challenges, end-to-end passages, tension of a one-goal Grand Final and finally the celebrations at the whistle all told the story of a contest that remained alive until the very end.

One strike into the top corner was ultimately all that separated them.
