A classic cold and rainy winter afternoon set the scene for the final round of the Women’s Premier League, with Rouse Hill Rams taking on Holroyd Rangers SC. Grey skies hung over the ground, the surface carried plenty of moisture and, as the afternoon grew darker, it had all the ingredients for a proper winter football contest.
Rams enjoyed much of the attacking play during the first half, spending plenty of time in Holroyd’s defensive third. They used their shape well, spreading the ball across the field and creating a number of good opportunities in front of goal, but the finishing touch just wouldn’t come.
Holroyd remained dangerous whenever possession changed hands. Their counterattacking play ensured the Rams couldn’t become too comfortable pushing numbers forward, with quick transitions regularly asking questions of the Rams defence.
For all the attacking movement at both ends, neither side could find the breakthrough and the teams went into half time locked at 0–0.
The pattern continued after the break. Rams maintained their structure and continued creating opportunities, moving the ball well and repeatedly finding ways into attacking areas. The chances were there, but converting them remained the challenge.
As the afternoon became increasingly gloomy, the lights around the ground flickered on and added another layer to the cold, wet winter atmosphere. With the match still scoreless and time disappearing, it increasingly looked as though neither side was going to find a way through.
Then, with less than five minutes remaining, everything changed.
A Holroyd attacking raid broke through the Rams defence and a strike found its way beyond the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. After spending so much of the match searching for a breakthrough, suddenly the Rams were 1–0 down with almost no time left to respond.
They didn’t have to wait long.
Within the next couple of minutes, a goalkeeper clearance didn’t quite find the distance required and was intercepted by a Rams player. Recognising the opportunity immediately, she took the quick strike and found the back of the net to make it 1–1.
After nearly an entire game without a goal, two arrived within minutes of each other.
Neither side could find another before full time, leaving the points shared at 1–1 to close out the regular Women’s Premier League season.
The conditions made this one particularly enjoyable to capture. Rain, a darkening winter sky, the lights coming on around the ground and then two late goals completely changing the mood of the match in the space of a few minutes — exactly the sort of unscripted sequence that makes football such a rewarding sport to photograph.
